Embracing Humility
Humility – it's a virtue often overlooked in a world that celebrates self-promotion and pride. Yet, in the life of a disciple, humility is not only valued but essential. It's through humility that we acknowledge our dependence on God and recognize our own inadequacies in light of His greatness.
Philippians 2:3-4 (NKJV) beautifully captures the essence of humility: "Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests but also for the interests of others." Here, the apostle Paul exhorts believers to adopt an attitude of humility, considering the needs and interests of others above their own.
Jesus Himself exemplified humility throughout His earthly ministry. In Matthew 20:28 (NKJV), He declares, "Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many." Despite His divine nature, Jesus willingly took on the form of a servant, demonstrating the profound humility that characterized His entire life.
Humility involves a willingness to set aside our own agendas and desires in favor of God's will. It's an acknowledgment of our need for His grace and a recognition that apart from Him, we can do nothing. Proverbs 22:4 (NKJV) reminds us, "By humility and the fear of the Lord are riches and honor and life." When we humble ourselves before God, He exalts us and bestows upon us the riches of His kingdom.
In the context of discipleship, humility plays a vital role in our relationships with others. 1 Peter 5:5 (NKJV) instructs, "Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for 'God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.'" Through humility, we foster unity, harmony, and mutual respect within the body of Christ.
As disciples, let us embrace humility as a foundational virtue on our journey of faith. May we follow the example of Christ, who humbled Himself for our sake, and seek to serve others with a spirit of humility and grace. In doing so, we reflect the beauty of Christ's character and bring glory to His name.
